I was testing the Exchange Connector in System Center 2012 Configuration Manager (CM12) so that I could inventory mobile devices. I used what I had on hand: 2 Surfaces (2 RT and RT), an iPad (v1) and a Windows 7 phone. After setting up a test Office365 account, I proceeded to attach one of my CM12 labs using the Exchange Connector. I then attached the Windows 7 phone using the built-in mail client. This device showed up within a few minutes. Next, I attached the Surface 2 RT and the Surface RT using the Outlook 2013 client. I waited for these devices to show up in CM12, but they never did. Why? I then attached the iPad to see what would happen. It showed up within a few minutes.
Why did the Windows 7 phone and iPad show up, but not the Surfaces? I contacted a group of friends for help and one of them asked which mail client I was using on the Surfaces. Based on that question I changed the Surface 2 RT to use both the built-in mail and the Outlook 2013 client software, and within a few minutes it showed up in CM12! It turns out that the Exchange Connector will filter out any device using Outlook and that is why the Surfaces didn’t show up.
