March 2020’s free Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr/SCCM/MEMCM) giveaway is the System Boot Status Dashboard. This report is available in both Power BI and SSRS formats.
Why do you need this report? Keep reading below!
Problem:
Slow boot times can lead to a number of problems. First, end-users can sometimes wait up to 20-minutes for a computer to re-boot, so that’s 20-minutes of unproductive time. Second, those end-users who do not want to turn their computers off or re-start them because of slow boot times make software updates ineffective. Why? Without a re-start, software updates do not become fully functional. As a result, IT Security gets a massive headache.
Why are boot times slow? There are several factors. In a recent blog post, Brad Anderson talked about slow computer boot times and Productivity Score. These are some questions he mentioned in the post (we summarized them) that you need to consider when thinking about slow boot times:
· What agents are deployed to computers?
· What GPOs are applied to computers?
· What type of hardware, for example, SSD, spinning disk, etc., is in use?
Keep in mind that agents could also include software that automatically starts at boot time (our giveaway last month helps show what software is setup to automatically start and, more importantly, what method is making the software startup, but this report is now only available within the full Enhansoft Reporting product).
Now that you know some of the problems caused by slow boot times and some of the factors leading to slow boot times, how can you use Configuration Manager to help solve this problem?
Solution: System Boot Status Dashboard
With Enhansoft’s System Boot Status Dashboard you can quickly see what computers take longer to reboot than the average computer in each boot time area: BIOS Duration, Boot Duration, Event Log Start and GPO Duration. Now you can focus your attention only on the computers that need it!
What do we mean? Take a look at the dashboard screenshot below. Right away you notice that the ES-20 computer’s BIOS duration time far exceeds that of any other computer. In fact, it is the ONLY computer which is above the average time of all the other computers! In the same screenshot, you see that the GPO duration time for CAOTTANT-GJL is almost one-and-a-half-times that of the next computer. Doesn’t that make you wonder, “What GPOs does this computer have that all the other ones don’t?” Clearly, the issues with these computers need to be investigated!
The System Boot Status Dashboard is available in both SSRS and Power BI formats. In both formats each computer is assigned the same color across all charts. The Power BI dashboard also includes a bonus feature: the data objects are interactive with the rest of the visuals on the canvas. In the full set, you can drill through from this dashboard to the Computer System Boot Details report.

Would you find it useful to know which computers have the slowest system boot times all in one report? Then get the System Boot Status Dashboard NOW!
Note: software update boot details are only shown in the drill through report, Computer System Boot Details. These details are NOT included in the dashboard because software updates, in general, vary greatly and the results only apply when software updates are installed. There is no troubleshooting at the dashboard level that can occur with this information.
Enhansoft Reporting – System Boot Status Dashboard
The System Boot Status Dashboard is found within Enhansoft Reporting’s Computer category. This category includes reports that tell you what user is logged on to what computer and it also includes the, “All-in-One Computer View,” report. In a nutshell, this is a one-stop-shop-report that answers all your questions about a computer!
The full System Boot Status Power BI and SSRS report-set includes:
· System Boot Status Dashboard
· Computer System Boot Details
Computer System Boot Details
You can turn to this report to see all of the system boot details about a specific computer. This includes: median, maximum and the latest system boot results for each boot area. By reviewing the latest system boot results, you can determine if a computer is getting slower or faster after each update.
