Problem: IT Licensing
Is your IT licensing budget tight? Do you know if everyone is using their copy of Microsoft Visio or Project or some other costly piece of software? Would you like to get a better understanding about who is using a piece of software and who is not? Would you like to reclaim unused software licenses? Are you looking for a low-cost solution to help answer these or other software licensing-related questions? If you want answers to similar questions, then read on!
Solution: Use the Recently Used Application Details Report
You already own SCCM, so why not use its Asset Intelligence feature? The Recently Used Application Details report uses this feature to help answer your software licensing questions. It ties the information provided by Installed Software and Asset Intelligence (AI) together. In case you didn’t know, both Installed Software and AI come free, out-of-the box, with all versions of SCCM including Current Branch.
SCCM’s built-in reports do not tie these two pieces of data (Installed Software and AI) together, but the Recently Used Application Details report does! With this report you can quickly see who hasn’t used a piece of software in 90+ days. You can then decide to reclaim software licenses by uninstalling unused ones and when to purchase additional software licenses. This report will help you make the most of your IT licensing budget.
In this report you will see the computer’s name, the top console user’s name, the Installed Software’s name, the publisher, and the version number. All of this information is tied directly to AI’s recently used applications information (product name, product version, last used by user name, last used date and time, and the number of days since it was last used).
You can see from the report result in the above screenshot that there is one PC that has not used Excel in over 90 days! You can reclaim that license by uninstalling Excel from that computer and then you can install it on another computer.
Unsure if you have SCCM’s Asset Intelligence feature enabled? No problem. Read our easy step-by-step guide on How to Setup, Configure and Use SCCM’s Asset Intelligence. Our Chief Architect, Garth Jones, says that, “This underused feature can be enabled within a few minutes.”
