How to Collect Free Disk Space Data in SCCM

This question comes up from time to time, “I am not getting Free Disk Space (MB) data in Hardware 01A – Summary of computers in a specific collection report. Why?” A few years ago I wrote a blog post describing why this was happening and the steps to take in order to collect free disk space data. The steps below will work with all versions of System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) starting with version 2012.

Why Disable Free Disk Space Data Collection?

Before getting to the steps on how to collect free disk space data, have you ever wondered why Microsoft disabled the collection of this information within hardware inventory?

I don’t know for sure why this was done, but my educated guess leads me to believe that it was done in order to save on network traffic, hardware inventory processing time, and to save space within SCCM’s SQL Server database.

All of these items make sense, BUT in my opinion the savings would be fairly nominal for all but the largest SCCM environments. I think that it would take an environment with over 150,000 computers before this would impact performance. Even then I would expect that you would only see a difference within the SCCM SQL Server database.

Why Collect Free Disk Space Data?

As with anything to do with SCCM, particularly custom inventory items, this begs the question, how useful is the information to you?
Only you can answer this question. I would argue, however, that knowing this information is beneficial! Being aware of the amount of free disk space available in client computers helps not only SCCM admins, but the service desk in troubleshooting problem computers. Therefore I would recommend enabling the collection of free disk space data within all environments.

I can tell you that in every customer environment that I have dealt with, the value of having free disk space data collected far out-weighs the small increase to the SCCM SQL Server database.

Free disk space data is not collected in SCCM by default, so in order to collect this information you will need to enable the attribute within the logical disk (SMS_LogicalDisk) class. Below are the steps to collect free disk space data. Remember that these steps also apply to Current Branch too.

Open the SCCM console. Select the Administration node and then Client Settings. In the results pane right-click on Default Client Settings and then click on Properties.

Select Hardware Inventory and then click on Set Classes…

Locate Logical Disk and select Free Space (MB). Finally click on the OK button until you return to the SCCM console.
At the next hardware inventory cycle all of your clients will start reporting free disk space data back to SCCM. Once the hardware inventory cycle is complete, Hardware 01A – Summary of computers in a specific collection will display this information.

Now that you have the free disk space results within the report, you can use the interactive sorting feature to see what computers are running low on free disk space and take action before they completely run out of disk space!

    I started writing the comment below but then found our that the “duplicates” I was getting were really optical drives with no media. Resolved it by adding “where SMS_G_System_LOGICAL_DISK.Description = “Local Fixed Disk”” to the end of the query. Thought I’d share that in case anyone else has the same problem.

    Thanks for the article. I’m trying to build a relatively basic “Hardware” query to be adapted for a Power BI dashboard that will be used by desktop techs for a quick reference. When I went to add the class, I was pleasantly surprised that it was already there. After I added Logical Disk.Free Space (MB) to the query, I get 2 results for almost every result- 1 result shows the value for free space, the other one is blank. Also notable is that MS Surfaces only produce a single result, and a few other machines produced 3 or 6 returns. Most but not all of the 3+ result machines return only one value with the others being blank in free space field. I figure I can set up some formatting in PBI to account for this, but duplicate returns sort of plague me in several queries so I’m hoping to understand this problem a little bit better.

      If you get getting duplicates, it is like due to an error within your query. My quick guess is that you have more than one drive per computer. Feel free to send the query to me and I will look at it.

      BTW, two thoughts.
      1) Take a look at this. https://www.enhansoftknowledge.com/knowledge-base/all-in-one-computer-view/
      2) Be careful as to how you write your Power BI report, if you are not careful you will be pulling in way too much data and SSRS report might be a better fit for this.
